Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, Autograph Collection
Taking the exit to Kananaskis it really doesn’t do justice what you will experience in the next 23 km to the Pomeroy. Untouched nature, ponds, snow capped mountains and sandy beaches will guide you through, probably spotting a few small and big animals. We were in awe of the magic that felt like was surrounding us.
As this is our first summer visit in this area we were unsure of what to expect as a family. After a two- night stay at the Pomeroy which is nestled in the Kananaskis Village and home of the Kananaskis Nordic Spa, and a few noteworthy restaurants we sure fell in love with this resort, and here my top six few reasons why:
Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge Features:
reason to love: one
Family Focused Accommodation
Either choose from a family suite with a separate bedroom and living room with fold out sofa or two adjoining bedrooms to suit your needs. Travelling with two toddlers means an early call time for us parents when we all “need to sleep” in one room. It’s always nice for us to end the evening with a glass of wine and good conversation in a separate space from the girls.
reasons to love: two
Culinary Offerings
We had a chance to try each of the culinary experiences in the resort and noticed a distinct trend of “children under 6 eat for free” when adult meals are purchased. Blacktail covers the pub style, fork brings in an Italian touch, Cedar the traditional steakhouse fine-dining style. Each restaurant has the option for outdoor seating, nestled between the surrounding mountains.
reasons to love: three
An Epic Waterpark
A real highlight for the girls is the pools and slides. A cold pool with gradual entry, water fountains, small slides is perfect for the tiniest ones. All the mountain theme with bears, beavers and other cute animals decorating the area. The big slide was fun for kids and more… the parents had some fun here too. And then my personal favourite the hot indoor/outdoor pool which is so relaxing. There is even sun beds for some R&R after soaking in the warm water.
The in-room dining is something I highly recommend. Even though there are so many amazing dining options for each meal (especially the Italian restaurant for breakfast, Mar Buffet for Lunch and Mexican Restaurant for dinner - here you go, these are my favourites!) the in-room dining is top notch. Each and every item we ordered - the vegetarian and the Mexican breakfast along with pastries and fruit were amazingly presented, hot and simply yummy. I usually stay away from room service because it rarely measures up, but this was, again, a solid 10/10.
reason to love: four
Playground
We ended off our walk in the trails at the playground which is suitable for children 2-5. It’s in a nicely shaded area with so much fun for the little ones. Right next to it is also tennis courts so this could be fun for young and old(er).
reasons to love: Five
Nordic Spa
This could warrant its own article, but also worth mentioning here. The Nordic Spa is a luxurious hot pool and steam park. Although under construction during our visit, it is now open again and we will definitely be back to explore. This area however is adults only- the great thing is that Pomeroy can arrange babysitting or of course the rooms are so spacious that a trusted person can come along on the stay and watch the little ones. Total R&R at Nordic Spa (as we have experienced in other thermal spas in Winnipeg and Ottawa!)
Travelling with toddlers has its own challenges, but Pomeroy exceeded our expectations of accommodations for families and activities for children. There is even a kids club that offers more activities (parent free), and we loved the fireside live music and smores hosted by the Pomeroy each night. We were so busy exploring the area that we did not even make it to the yoga class or guided hikes (?) but that only means we will have to return shortly to experience these offerings.
All in all, this was the perfect family getaway with felt like being in a resort engulfed in nature and magic of the Canadian Rockies. Being able to show these curious little ones the beauty that surrounds us is a priceless gift.
