How to get the newest tips and tricks in the beauty scene? You talk to a make up artist who works with some of your favourite products, has a huge name in the beauty and fashion scene and lives in LA - altogether one of the trendiest place to be! When the opportunity came up to ask Nikki DeRoest some of my burning questions when it comes to make up, I jumped on it and am super excited to share her take on these.
"The older I get the less makeup I wear. Maybe you are just over it, or more confident - or a combination of both" - Nikki DeRoest
1. Since we are talking lipsticks today, what makes a great lipstick in your opinion, and what’s your secret to applying lipstick properly? How do you make it last?
A great lipstick is something that is light weight and hydrating and full of good ingredients. It should also be one that is long lasting so you do not have to think about it and that is why I love Bare Mineral's launch, especially because it is a clean formula. With clean products you usually cannot have it all, but this product has just hit all these points, which is incredible. Nikki also loves to wear lipsticks in different ways: straight from the bullet, or with my finger and blur the edges.
2. What 3 make up items can’t you live without?
Thinking about when going to the gym... number one would be BarePro concealer, to spot treat and also as a all over coverage products, the BarePro lipstick in Cinnamon which would cover blush, lips and eyeshadow (which I thought was a great tip for all of us & she mentioned that the shade Cinnamon truly looks great on everyone!) and the third product would be coconut oil because I could put it all over my body, use if on my skin, hair ... or cook my eggs in it.
3. If you do a quick 5 min make up look, what do you focus on?
Complexion first - if your skin is clear and glowy you will always look good. An eyebrow gel to keep the brows in check and going light on eyes or no eye makeup. Nikki mentioned the older she gets the less makeup she wears and I can completely relate to that (although I love long lashes and wear a lot of falsies). A lip product is always a good idea and the Gen Nude lip pencils are great in adding some volume and cheat the lips a little bigger - "Boarderline" and "Freestyle" are Nikki's favourites!
4. I’ve seen a lot of bushy eyebrows in your work, what is your way in achieving those?
Always starting with brushing the brows up. typically people are more sparse on the outer edges, Nikki will start there. Depending on the person and if the brow is very sparse, a wet pen is ideal, otherwise a regular dry pencil is fine to create those hair like strokes, always mimicking in the direction of the hair growth. No powders because the brows look too flat, whereas with a pencil the brows can look more bushy and full.
Tip: if a pencil does not seem to be picking up, your skin is most likely a bit oily from foundation or skincare so add a small amount of translucent powder all over the brow first!
5. As a world traveler, how do you feel about “in-flight skin care”? If you believe in it, what are your holy grail essentials? Tips to make your skin glow from within?
In theory, yes - BUT....There is a skincare regime that Nikki follows for flights. Bringing little balms for lips, hands and around eyes is usually enough. Skincare is always key and Nikki will put her skincare on at home and wear the original Bare Pro foundation because it is so clean. Prepping the skin before a flight is much more important than using skincare during your time on the plane.
