We also love High Tea during this time because there really is nothing more regal than that, and always make sure we purchase an ornament as a souvenir from a holiday trip. Overall, we try to make this time less about gifting and more about spending time together, and making memories.
Ever since Jeremiah and I met, we discovered that we both come from families and cultures with lots of traditions and customs. Especially during this time of the year, there are many things we like doing that our families did when we were growing up, but we also want to make sure we create our own traditions for our own little family! Over the past few years we have started making our own Christmas ornaments with memories from the year and we try to make time for special outings like the Christmas markets, tree lightings and usually on December 5th (as many of you know the number 5 has a very special meaning to us!) we celebrate our 'Christmas anniversary'.
Since we love travelling so much, we knew our traditions could not be very specific to one location. In the last few years we visited many places during the Christmas season, like Oslo and Stockholm, Prague, Poland, and many places in Germany and this year we thought we will stay close to home and explore the festive season in the Niagara Region.
Afternoon Tea is a special occasion for us and is reserved for special moments and getaways just like this. The focus is on us and the beautiful memories that result from it. The Prince of Wales Hotel offers not only a beautiful spread of treats and Solane tea selection, but also a space to relax, enjoy and be festive. I liked the cozy feeling that Prince of Wales offered and can we even talk about the decor?
Is there even Christmas without a Christmas play? Another tradition of ours is watching a play during the holidays and Niagara-On-The-Lake just blew us away with its rendition of the "Christmas Carol" at The Royal George Theatre. Some may say it's boring to watch the same play over and over (we have watched it 5 times, and love it more each time!), but the interpretation of this version was outstanding. I cannot rave enough about how much we loved the costumes, the modern touches, the humour, the props.. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and the best part is that the play is on until December 23, and tickets start at $28!
And what is Christmas without some glitz and sparkle? The Niagara Falls are lit up in a variety of colours and it is magical. If this isn't enough, the Niagara Winter Festival of Lights is just the cherry on top, something for everyone! The 8km parkway is lit up with different colours, themes and it is breathtaking for young and old. Maybe we will add this to our collection of traditions and I am sure we will be back next year!
For more festive ideas and things that you can also make a tradition for you and your family, check my Instagram Story Highlights. A few amazing suggestions would be the Dickensian Feast at The Prince of Wales Hotel (you can book this as a package with a play!) or the Candle Light stroll which only happens once a year and next year will be the 30th anniversary of this tradition in Niagara-On-The-Lake.
