What to expect?
Marrakech, I cannot even explain how much I instantly fell in love with this place. My first time ever in Africa and I am obsessed with the culture, the lifestyle and overall warmth of the people. A few people were very curious about safety and travelling as a Caucasian woman in Africa, and let me tell you all about it! I could not have felt more welcome, respected and safe while being in and around Marrakech in the markets, the streets in general and the sights. Men dominate the service staff and each and every one was very respectful and kind.
Marrakech is a maze, so be prepared. Our kind Riad manager advised us to get Map.me (it is a free app), which you will open and it will sync the maps in your area, and will then work whenever you do not have data/wifi. This would have been super handy, as we got very lost in the maze of the old Medina. I am saving you the getting lost part!!
Stay at a Riad
Riads are the perfect way to experience Marrakech and the Medina. A Riad is a guesthouse, typically with a pool in the court yard. Our Riad was in the north of the Medina, Riad Porte Royal, and the most perfect and picturesque place which kind staff. Located in a quieter street, it is a great place to relax. I love the decor in the neutral colours and the great thing about the Riad is that the breakfast in served "whenever and where ever".
Explore at Soukhs
We only had very limited time for the markets, but you can spend days here! Different venders sell nearly everything you could ever imagine. The best tip that we got was to bargain ALOT, and whatever price is offered, start at 50% of that. Even with this tactic the seller will make a profit and you don't overpay insanely. It is a great place to shop for souvenirs like carpets, leather poufs or leather sandals, as well as clothing and other home decor. The moroccan culture really resonated with me, so I could spend all day shopping here.
Camel Ride
A bucket list item, and I can not explain how amazing it was to get so close to these beautiful animals. Camels are story book creatures to me, and I really looked forward to doing a camel ride. These animals very gentle and super chill, no reason to have any fear. I would compare a camel ride to a slower and a bit bumpier horse ride, but I wouldn't miss it for the world. Usually these camel rides are finished off with some Moroccan tea (probably just like most activities or tasks in Morocco!).
Fine Dining of Moroccan cuisine
While staying in Morocco, of course try the street food (if you have a tough stomach!) and I highly recommend the olives and fruit juices but if your budget allows, give a fine dining a try! I highly recommend Al Ain at the Royal Palm Marrakech. I have written a separate post about the entire experience, because it was that amazing and memorable!
Moroccan Sunsets
There is something about the African sun, and this is not just a sterotype. Each evening the sunsets were so beautiful and the light just so warming. We went to a spot called Kasbah Igdalen Berber Eco Lodge, which was an oasis overlooking the Agafay desert.
