Our recent trip to Ahlbeck at the Baltic Sea (Ostsee) was more amazing than I would have imagined. Travelling to way more exotic places, I thought this short getaway within Germany would be nice but not much more than that. To my surprise, I was blown away by the soft sand and calm atmosphere which instantly puts one in vacation mode. For a few tips to make the most of your Baltic Sea visit, read on:
ONE | Eat Fresh Fish
Almost every restaurant offers fresh, local fish along the coast of the Baltic Sea. It is a real treat and either in a cream sauce or smoked or marinated you will experience the traditional German taste. Of course there are many little snack bars or “Imbiss” where you can find fish sandwiches “Fischbroetchen” that will blow your mind. Must tries are Matjes, Seelachs, and Hering.
TWO | Walks on the beach
A morning walk on an empty beach is something so special to me. Just sand between your toes, the sound of the waves and that special someone holding your hand. Simple things that make life beautiful! And the best part, you dont need to wake up at dawn. The beach barely got busy by 10 am. The sand by the way is amazing, so soft and covered with seashells.
THREE | Walk/Bike to Poland
Ahlbeck is only 2 km away from the boarder to Poland. A beautiful walkway connects the two countries (both part of the EU, so no official boarder!) and a statue is located right at the boarder. I had my “A Walk to Remember”-moment where we literally stood in Germany and Poland at the same time. If walking is not that appealing to you, you can rent bikes along the promenade and bike to Poland!
FOUR | Polish Food Market is a MUST
Walk another 2km from the official boarder and find the most amazing food market, restaurants and street musicians and artists. Huge ice cream creations, waffles on a stick, meat sticks and cool drinks are only a few of the cool items. Almost every cafe or restaurant offers live music. Poland is beautiful with its architecture, beaches and very friendly people.
FIVE | A meal with a view at the Panorama Restaurant
Back in Ahlbeck, Germany it is a real treat to dine with a view. The Panorama Restaurant on the 6th floor of the TRYP Hotel offers a great dinner buffet overlooking the coast of the Baltic Sea. Watching the sunset here is definitely a moment to remember.
